Materials:

- Sponge: Any household sponge will do. I bought mine at Walmart in a pack of 6.
- Elastic: Same as the sponges; any elastics will do. The bigger the better so you can make the wrap around tight.
- Paint: I used the neon Crayola pack to make my butterflies really pop out and create a vibrant effect.
- Glitter: I usually have some sort of glitter lying around. I used pink but any color can work.
- Acrylic Marker: I usually always stick to acrylic markers when drawing on paint, it adheres better and the colors are bold.
- Cardstock: Construction paper can work here as well but I find the sturdiness of cardstock works well for this craft. There will likely be a thick layer of paint being sponged onto the paper so it needs some added support.
Instructions:

1. Take the elastic and wrap it in the middle on the sponge. You may need to wrap it around a few times depending on the size of your elastic and sponge. It should be tight enough that the center of the sponge is indented creating a butterfly or bow-like apparence (full steps in the video below).

2. Next, take 3 different paint colors (or more if desired) and place them in a row along side each other.

3. Press down the elastic wrapped sponge into the paint colors making sure that all the sponge is covered in paint.

4. Press the sponge filled with paint onto the cardstock and remove to reveal a colorful butterfly! Repeat this step as many times as you wish to fill your paper. You may need to go back and get some paint.

5. Sprinkle the glitter over the butterflies for an added touch! Let the paint dry.

6. Lastly, take the acrylic marker and draw a butterfly body and antennas in the center of the painted butterfly.

This sponge butterfly craft is a simple and joyful way to celebrate the season with your little ones. With minimal prep and plenty of colorful creativity, it’s a fun addition to your collection of spring craft ideas for kids. Your toddlers will love exploring the soft sponge texture while creating their own beautiful butterfly craft to display.
