  • Oil : Any house hold oil will work for this activity. I had vegetable oil on hand.
  • Milk: Any milk will do as long as white in color.
  • Food Coloring: I chose to use blue, pink and purple as these as my toddlers favorite colors at the moment!
  • Droppers: These are one of the first sensory items I bought when I started sensory bins. We have used them over and over again.
  • Small Containers: I bought a few from the Dollar Tree to use for sensory bins.
  • Sensory Bin: The one I used here is also from the Dollar Tree.

1. Pour vegetable oil into sensory bin. Pour enough so that the whole base is covered and has a good base layer.

2. Pour the milk into different containers. Add one food coloring per container. I make blue, purple and pink. Stir until combined.

3. Fill the droppers with milk and squirt onto oil base. Watch as your little one realizes the colors do not mix and create a colorful lava lamp effect!

This rainbow oil lava lamp sensory bin is so fun for kids because the bright colors and bubbly movement capture their attention while encouraging hands-on exploration. Watching the swirling “lava” effect sparks curiosity and introduces simple science concepts in a playful way. The combination of color mixing, scooping, and observing helps build focus and fine motor skills. My toddlers were completely mesmerized by the activity and were fascinated by the fact the oil would not mix with the milk!
